Itineraries and tourist activities

Built as roman “pagus” on top of a steep hill, Monforte d’Alba obtained its present denomination during the early Middle Ages when it was an important military bulwark. Due to its fortifications and to its defense structures, the town got the name “ Mons Fortis”. During the year 1028 A.D., Monforte saw the development, under Gerardo’s guide, of a strong community of “Catari”. Its members, blamed of heresy, were arrested, prosecuted and condemned to the stake by the archbishop of Milan, Ariberto d’Antignano. During the late Middle Ages, Monforte d’Alba was under possession of the marquis of Cortemilia, the town of Alba, the Visconti of Milano and finally the marquis Del Carretto.

The Ca’ Brusà agritourism is located on a path that during ‘200, had a great importance for its links to the central towns of Langa especially when the town of Alba was trying to free up the roads that led to Liguria.

In 1986, a natural amphitheater was innagurated in the historic center of Monforte by the famous pianist Mieczyslaw Horszowski, with perfect acoustics derived from the natural slope of the terrain morphology. The natural amphitheater is presented with steps, and presents a stage consisting of a wall and the portal of the Scaampi Gardens. Since 1986, it has been a venue for major concerts by famous artists such as Paolo Conte, Massimo Ranieri, Vinicio Capossela and many others, as well as of the national jazz festival “Monfortinjazz”. In Horszowski amphitheater, a variety of concerts, theatrical performances and film screenings also take place.
